Something happened this year when photographing the pow wow in Maskwacis. There was a definite spirit in the air.

I’ve been working with several of the Nations on Maskwacis over the years and each year is a new learning experience.

Most recently, Samson Cree Nation hired me to capture the Nation’s pow wow with select group of photographers. I’m told this is one of the biggest years in terms of attendance and it was seen with the large number of dancers in full regalia.

You can see all the works from the photographers on the Nation’s Facebook page.

What actually is a pow wow? I’m not the best source for this so I have included a couple links within this post to help folks understand. Powwows.com has some great information about the culture and they really capture the spirit of its organic growth here:

The outfits worn by the dancers, like the styles of clothing today, evolve over time. It is not a stagnant culture, but a vibrant and changing way of life.

Each year I work with Samson Cree Nation I attempt to elaborate on the spirit of the pow wow with my photos. This year everyone really brought the energy, and with a group of photographers, it really pushed me to do my best. I want to share them with you now.

Samson Cree Nation used one of my images for the cover of their newsletter as well.
